Understanding market regimes for better research
Learn to distinguish trend, range, and volatility before evaluating a strategy.
Start with the environment
A market regime is a description of observed conditions, not a prediction. A directional period, a sideways range, and a volatile period can each produce very different outcomes for the same rules. Describe the historical environment before interpreting a backtest result.
Use only information available then
Calculate indicators from closed historical bars and preserve the window used for each decision. A regime label assigned using future prices introduces look-ahead bias. For simple research, compare moving-average slope, historical price range, and realized volatility using prior observations.
Test across different periods
Evaluate the same versioned configuration on separate chronological periods. Inspect drawdown, turnover, and periods with no useful signals rather than selecting only the best return. Changing thresholds after reviewing the test period makes it another training period.
Keep risk independent
An estimated regime must never override hard controls. The current AlgoIndex release supports CSV research and manual paper simulation; it does not classify live market regimes or consume a live feed.
